The series is a continuation of the selective colour fine art photos that photographer Paul Williams has been working on for several years. Unlike the other selective colour series “Unreliable Sightings” is not themed and is a series of unrelated images that show the world in colour & black & white.
The one thing about street photography I have always found appealing is the way the split second freezes people into fascinating juxtapositions. The heart of the photograph is always the thing that caught my eye but as I look at the photos I see things to the edge of the photos that I could not have seen. Relationships between the people in the subjects often take on another meaning. Subjects become statues in a tableau. The use of selective color enhances these relationships and isolates the main players against a black and white background.
Street photography is always difficult because you neither want to offend or intrude into peoples lives. Yet we sit in parks or at pavement cafes and watch other people. This is a very popular pass time with millions and nobody thinks anything of it. In fact many go out to be seen yet get upset when someone pays them the greatest compliment by photographing them. I think it is this strange contradiction that makes street photography so interesting.
